Leading with cultural sensitivity isn’t easy, so what does it mean to be a culturally sensitive leader?
First, it means that leaders have cultural competence, i.e., the right knowledge, skills, and experience to lead people from diverse cultures and backgrounds effectively.
Second, it means they lead others with cultural humility, i.e., honour others’ beliefs and customs, are conscious of their limitations, have a desire to learn, take a stance of not knowing, and are critically self-reflective on how they lead others.
Third, it means they develop their emotional intelligence to ensure they leverage their emotional smarts to listen, empathise and engage with others in a culturally sensitive way.
