What Are Strengths?
Strengths are defined as “our pre-existing patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviours that are authentic, energizing, and which lead to our best performance” (Centre for Applied Positive Psychology).
Simeon Boseley is an accredited strengths development coach with the Centre for Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) and provides strengths assessment, development and coaching for both individuals and teams, using the CAPP Strengths Profile. Using your strength
How do you know when you’re using your strength? You will usually be performing at a higher level, be extremely energised and you will tend to use your strengths more often.

Strengths Based Approach
Based on research conducted by Alex Linley (2008) a strengths-based approach has four fundamental elements:
- A focus on what is right, rather than what is wrong.
- Every person in the world has strengths and deserves respect for their strengths.
- Our areas of greatest potential are in the areas of our greatest strengths.
- We succeed by fixing our weaknesses only when making the most of our strengths.
Using our strengths is the smallest thing we can do to make a big difference.

The Benefits of Strengths
The use of strengths is one of the key drivers of employee engagement, which is linked to improved employee retention and loyalty.
- A focus on strengths in teams allows for the efficient allocation of tasks with greater flexibility and encourages collaboration.
- When managers emphasised strengths, performance was 36.4% higher, compares to a 26.8% decline when emphasising weaknesses.
- An understanding of strengths encourages people to value difference, which enables higher creativity and performance.
- Employees are more open to accepting change when selected on the basis of their strengths.
- People who use their strengths experience higher levels of wellbeing and authenticity, creating a culture of high performance.
- The use of strengths broadens mindsets by encouraging people to discover new ways of thinking, which builds resilience.
